Introducing 116 European helpline numbers
Ofcom today published proposals to introduce pan-European 116 helpline phone numbers in the UK. These numbers will allow consumers to call key public assistance telephone services from the same number regardless of which EU country they are in.
At the moment many helpline and hotline numbers differ across Europe making it difficult for visitors to find the right number when they need help or advice. By introducing 116 numbers, anyone travelling around Europe will be able to use these services by calling the same memorable number that they use at home.
The European Commission has already reserved pan-European 116 numbers for three types of service:
- 116 000 for missing children hotlines;
- 116 111 for children’s helplines; and
- 116 123 for emotional support helplines.
Under Ofcom’s proposals, calls to these services will be free of charge whether from a fixed line, mobile or public phone box. Ofcom will consult on the proposed arrangements for other 116 services when they are reserved by the European Commission.
Ofcom, advised by independent panels set up by the Government, will choose suitable organisations to allocate these numbers to.
Ofcom’s Chief Executive, Ed Richards said: “These new numbers will offer people the peace of mind that if they ever need to call these kinds of services, they will be able to do so wherever they are in Europe.”
Ofcom’s consultation closes on 9 December 2008 and can be found at: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/116/
Ends.
